How the "Great Taking" will work...
UK borrowing costs have pushed up to levels we have not seen since the financial crisis, with long-term gilt yields flashing warning signs. But Britain is not booming. Growth is weak, taxes are high, public services still feel underfunded, and inflation remains sticky. So why are interest rates still so high? In this video, I look at whether the Bank of England’s official inflation narrative tells the whole story — or whether part of what we are seeing is actually currency defence. If sterling weakens while gilt yields stay high, that may be a sign that markets are demanding more to lend to the UK government while still losing confidence in the pound. We look at the warning signs: high gilt yields, weak sterling, imported inflation, stagflation, and the uncomfortable question of whether Britain is becoming harder to trust financially. This is not a prediction of an immediate crisis. But it may be a warning light worth watching.
